Unlike a traditional massage focusing on the muscles, MLD, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, is an ultra-light, advanced technique that stimulates the lymph rather than the muscular system. The aim is to promote the movement of lymphatic fluid around the body and away from the areas of swelling into an area where the lymphatic system works as it should. As the lymph system is also responsible for moving and eliminating fats, manual lymphatic drainage massage can help with bloating, fluid retention, cellulite and sluggish weight loss.
What to expect
If you are used to traditional massage, an MLD massage will feel a lot different as the aim of it is also very different. It does not target the muscles but the lymph system and is, therefore, a lot more gentle. Like a classic relaxation massage, though, it is very calming. MLD massage does not use wax or oil. It is done with the therapist’s hands on your skin using a gentle pumping or cupping movement in the direction of the lymph flow. Lymphatic drainage is an advanced technique and must be carried out by a massage therapist specially trained in this discipline.
